Active Directory and DNS migration

I. PRE-MIGRATION
  1. Migration planning
    • – number of network interface cards (NICs)
  2. Prepare Source server
    • – back up
    • – collect migration data
  3. Prepare Destination server
    • – install Windows Server 2012 R2
    • – assign temporary server name
    • – assign temporary IP address
    • – join domain
II. MIGRATION
  1. Make Destination server a Domain Controller
  2. Manually migrate DNS server settings
  3. Transfer FSMO roles (faster with CMD):
    • Start CMD as Administrator
    • C:\Users\Administrator>ntdsutil
    • ntdsutil: roles
    • fsmo maintenance: connections
    • server connections: connect to server dc1 [dc1 is the name of the old server/FSMO master]
    • server connections: quit
    • fsmo maintenance: transfer naming master
    • fsmo maintenance: transfer infrastructure master
    • fsmo maintenance: transfer PDC
    • fsmo maintenance: transfer RID master
    • fsmo maintenance: transfer schema master
    • fsmo maintenance: quit
    • ntdsutil: quit
  4. Migrate IP addresses and rename server
  5. Perform verification steps
III. POST-MIGRATION (OPTIONAL)
  1. Retire Source server
  2. Roll-back migration
  3. Troubleshoot migration
